Advocates for Children of New York
Advocates for Children of New York (AFC) is a New York City nonprofit that helps families navigate the education system and protect the educational rights of children, with a particular focus on students from low-income communities. Families can access free guidance, legal representation, know-your-rights trainings, workshops, and practical resources covering special education, IEPs, school placement, early childhood education, and other school-related challenges. AFC also has resources specifically addressing autism and education. Families can contact AFC’s education helpline to discuss their concerns and request language assistance. AFC offers assistance in English, has Spanish- and Chinese-speaking education specialists, and provides telephone interpretation for other languages. AFC assesses each issue and determines what assistance it can provide, which may range from information for self-advocacy to direct support from an education specialist or attorney.

CDC Developmental Milestones: Checklists and Resources (2 Months–5 Years)
Free milestone checklists and developmental information from the CDC’s Learn the Signs. Act Early. program for parents and caregivers of children ages 2 months through 5 years. Families can explore how children play, learn, speak, act, and move; complete or print age-specific checklists; and find tips to support development. The resource also explains what to do when a child is not meeting milestones, has lost skills, or there are other developmental concerns. These materials support developmental monitoring and are not a substitute for standardized, validated developmental screening tools.
Printable milestone checklists are also available in additional languages; language availability varies by material.
